Universitas Perguruan Tinggi Ilmu Alquran (PTIQ) Jakarta: Mengaktualkan Nilai-Nilai Alquran

Institut Perguruan Tinggi Ilmu Alquran (PTIQ) is proud to be the first college in the world that specializes in the study and memorization of the Quran. One of its alumni, Ziyad Ul Haq, stated that he gathered a wealth of knowledge at PTIQ, complementing the Quranic studies he had previously acquired at a traditional Islamic boarding school. He learned about various aspects of the Quran, including tafsir (exegesis), qiraat (recitation), nagham (Quranic melodies), and other Quranic sciences during his time at PTIQ, which focused primarily on "Ulumul Quran" or the sciences of the Quran.

PTIQ stands out from other institutions as the majority of its students opt for the tahfiz program, where they memorize the entire 30 Juz' (chapters) of the Quran. Ziyad Ul Haq emphasized that this comprehensive approach allows students not only to memorize the Quran but also to gain a deep understanding of various Quranic sciences. He studied at PTIQ from 2001 to 2004, and he credits the institution for teaching him how to think critically and navigate life effectively.

Comparing the principles he learned at the traditional Islamic boarding school with those he encountered during his college years, Ziyad Ul Haq mentioned some contradictions with real-life situations. For instance, some beliefs in the boarding school environment were too strict, like prohibiting Quran memorizers from watching television. While he agreed with the intention behind these rules, emphasizing modesty and avoiding sinful acts, he argued that a television is just an inanimate object and its impact depends on how it's used. He compared it to a knife, which can be a useful tool in the hands of a chef but can be misused if wielded by a criminal.

He suggested that sometimes the application of such rules in the boarding school environment is overly rigid and fails to adapt to the changing times. He believes that Islam is a flexible religion that can be applied in various contexts and locations.

At PTIQ, students are given a degree of freedom, challenging them to exercise self-discipline in this environment. Ziyad Ul Haq pointed out that the experience of freedom during his college years prepared him for real-life situations. He expressed gratitude for having learned valuable life lessons from the freedom he experienced, although some of his friends may not have handled it as well.

The rector of PTIQ, Nasaruddin Umar, explained that PTIQ, which recently celebrated its 40th anniversary, was established as the world's first institution to specialize in the memorization and study of the Quran. It was founded to promote the values of the Quran, cleanse the community of syncretism, superstitions, and innovations, and preserve the tradition of Quran memorization. PTIQ aims to prepare professional imams and leaders and nurture moderate Muslim generations.

According to Nasaruddin, understanding the Quran without its historical and contextual background is risky. Therefore, PTIQ provides students with a comprehensive education that includes 32 branches of Quranic sciences. PTIQ is also unique in its focus on preparing qari (reciters), qariah (female reciters), imams, muazin (call to prayer announcers), hafiz (memorizers), Muslim artists, and Quranic experts. PTIQ supplies qaris to all provinces in Indonesia, making them regular participants in national and international Quranic competitions.

Nasaruddin expressed his pride in PTIQ alumni who have held significant positions in mosques throughout Indonesia, especially in Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi. He also noted that PTIQ's reach extends beyond Indonesia, with students from various countries showing interest in Quranic studies at the institution.

Currently, PTIQ is expanding its academic programs, including the introduction of a Ph.D. program following the success of its master's program. According to Nasaruddin, there has been a growing interest in studying at PTIQ in recent years, and the institution now boasts a modern campus and a spacious five-story dormitory to accommodate students.
